Despite a very wet hurricane and much-needed rain across some parts of America, drought conditions still afflict 60.1% of the continental U.S., according to the Associated Press. This is far from a short-term anomaly that will even out over time.

In fact by 2025, analysts predict two-thirds of all countries will be handicapped by water stress. The situation is especially dire in China, which has its sights set on importing water from North America.

I have a few timely ideas that can enhance your personal water security in emergencies, cut your water bill to near zero, and give you a meaningful measure of independence from utility companies plagued by deteriorating infrastructure.

Even if you’re on a private well, learning these techniques can give you critical skills for establishing a back-up supply or for bartering.

Harvesting Rainwater and Snowmelt Is Simple and Effective…

Harvesting rainwater is sustainable and provides many rural communities around the world with both domestic and potable water. It’s also something that’s been practiced for over 4,000 years.

Establishing a rain (or snow) water harvesting system can improve your self-reliance in good times and bad. It’s also a great way to cut costs and in most cases is more affordable than drilling or digging a well. In light of water shortages around world and a depreciating dollar, it can prove to be a prudent long-term investment. And in a true crisis, a gallon jug of clean water will prove to be a fantastic barter item.

One warning: some areas have weird laws about who “owns” the rain and snowmelt, Colorado and Oregon being two examples. In Oregon, for instance, state law says all water belongs to the government, and if you want “to divert or store it, you have to acquire a water right from the state,” says Oregon Water Resources Department administrator Tom Paul.

An Oregon man, Gary Harrington, was accused of diverting and storing tributary water into manmade ponds on his 175-acre property. Harrington argued the ponds were only catching and storing the rainwater and snowmelt that fell on his land. He lost the argument and spent 30 days in jail! Check your local area for ordinances and avoid nasty surprises. Or simply use common sense and don’t go overboard; there are plenty of ways to collect and store water without excavating, building dams, or otherwise drawing undue attention to yourself.

The good news is, many municipalities encourage rainwater harvesting and even offer rebates. You can search for available rebates online by using the term – rain harvesting rebates – and your area.

Otherwise, you can easily find the equipment you need online or at your local hardware or department store, like Home Depot or Sears.

A Basic Rain Harvesting System That Works!

A basic system is a relatively easy and quick way to get started. The main idea is to catch the rain as it runs off your roof and guide it into a container. Do not use water collected from a roof for human consumption unless you’ve sanitized it, but it’s great for watering your roses, your survival vegetable garden, and your fruit trees.

On a 1,000 square feet roof, a rudimentary collection system can yield about 623 gallons of water from 1 inch of rain. With this basic system and following proper water conservation methods (i.e. fixing leaks, drip irrigation, etc.), you could have enough water for your garden, washing your car, water for animals, and more.

At minimum you’ll need:

A sloped roof;

Rain gutters;

Downspout;

A filter to keep out or minimize debris such as leaves from clogging your system;

A container for the water, like a trash can or barrel (rainwater barrels run about $100 retail, but savvy preppers look for discarded food barrels for a few bucks or even free);

Secure container cover or screen so mosquitoes don’t breed in the water;

And a method to get the water in the container to where you need it. A pail, a hand or mechanical pump, or simply a gravity fed hose.

Can You Drink Rain Water? Yes, But…

If you want to use your rainwater for drinking and cooking (and brushing your teeth), you’ll want to add a few important steps to your system, or hire an expert to do it for you. As you can guess, these steps involve better filtration and purification so it’s safe to drink.

In addition to the steps above, many who use rainwater for drinking also utilize:

A Pre-Wash. The idea behind this step is to divert the first few gallons of rain water that washes off the roof containing bird droppings, chemical residue from pollution, sediment, etc., away from entering your water container;

Ceramic and Carbon Filters. High quality filters can remove inorganic chemicals and many biological dangers. Read the manufacturer’s labels for details;

Purification. These methods include reverse osmosis and/or Ultra Violet (UV) light to make certain even the smallest biological threats, like viruses, are dealt with. Colloidal Silver has been used by NASA and many others to purify water for decades.

Some Portable or On-the-Go Ideas You Can Use in a Pinch…

Even if you’re not planning on using your rainwater for drinking, or if your electricity goes down and your home water filtration system, such as the UV light and reverse osmosis, gets knocked offline, you may want to have a few back-ups ready:

Take the extra steps to keep your rain catchment system clear of debris and sediment, and protected from mosquito infestation. Even if you only plan to use the water in your garden, this will save you a few important steps if you run into a situation where you need the water for survival.

It may be handy to own one or more hand-held water purifiers, like the Katadyn, which is often sold for camping. You can also find gravity fed counter top versions, such as the Big Berkey, that can purify gallons of water without physical effort. Read the manufacturer’s labels for effectiveness information.

Boiling water can help kill many biological dangers, but may not help with all chemical or radiological pollutants. You might consider using a solar oven to boil water and save on energy and fuel.

Distilling water and chemical treatment is proven effective for purifying water. Our Self-Reliance Mega Manual offers detailed instructions for different methods to distill water, and even how to use chlorine or iodine to treat water for drinking.

Installing a basic rainwater and snowmelt harvesting system is a wise and inexpensive investment for the future. For a more advanced solution, consider installing a cistern, either underground or in your basement. Even a home sprinkler system designed for fire safety can serve double duty as a backup drinking water supply. Fire departments also use cisterns for water storage in areas that do not have public water lines or access to a fire pond.

An easier and cheaper option if you live in or near a rural area is to strike up a close relationship with a nearby farmer. Farms tend to have advanced and/or redundant water supply installations. Being able to barter your goods and services with a farmer could help you secure access to enough water to take care of your household should the need arise.

And if you ever consider buying a rural property as a bug-out location or for your retirement, take a look at farms; they are nearly always built on land that has proven water supplies. The landscape in many areas is dotted with old dairy farms or poultry farms that have seen better days; the cows and chickens may be gone, but it’s a pretty good bet there’s still a reliable water source on site.

If water conditions worsen, the cost of the equipment and hiring experts would only go up. It may be something to look into sooner, rather than later.

Ten Health Ranger predictions about December 2012 and the first half of 2013

Sunday, November 11, 2012 by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger Editor of NaturalNews.com

(NaturalNews) Obama’s re-election has set a number of things in motion behind closed doors that are about to emerge before the Summer of 2013. If anything, Obama’s victory has accelerated the timeline of financial collapse that’s now a foregone conclusion for the United States of America.

Here’s what I see unfolding between now and mid-2013 (or before other dates as stated below):

#1) December 21st, 2012 “Mayan Calendar” day will be a bust

Nothing special will happen on this day other than lots of people meditating globally, which is, in a way, a special thing all by itself. But the universe isn’t coming to an end.
The day after the non-event, watch for the mainstream media to blame “doomsday websites” for claiming doomsday was going to occur. In truth, most alternative websites are claiming nothing much will happen on that day.

#2) Before January 2, 2013, another huge fiat money creation scheme will be initiated by the Fed to prevent a U.S. bankruptcy

The U.S. government won’t be allowed to go bankrupt just yet. Although it has run out of money yet again under the insane debt spending blowout of Obama, the debt ceiling will be raised yet again, and the Fed will print new money to keep buying up U.S. debt.
The long-term effect of this compounding debt spiral is, of course, financial suicide, but that doesn’t seem to occur to today’s zombified voters who are really only concerned with how many handouts they can get right NOW!

#3) Just like he did last year, Obama will use New Year’s Eve (or possibly Christmas Eve) to sign another police state executive order

Last year, Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) executive order on New Year’s Eve, cleverly burying news of the event underneath New Year’s celebrations nationwide.
The NDAA gutted the Bill of Rights and turned America into a bonafide police state, with no due process, no Fifth Amendment, and no Bill of Rights. It authorized secret arrests, secret kill lists of American citizens, and endless secret prison detainment without ever being charged with a crime, among other things. It signified the complete destruction of the Bill of Rights, and Obama signed it in secret.
This year, he’ll use a similar holiday cover to sign some other devastating executive order that, for example, criminalizes criticism of the government (or something else similarly ridiculous).

#4) Massive food inflation will strike the USA beginning in February or March

The droughts of 2012 will be felt via sticker shock at the grocery stores beginning in the first quarter of 2013. Watch for not just price increases on most products made with wheat and corn, but also shrinking food package volumes so that manufacturers deliver less food in a similar-looking package.
Manufacturers will “downsize” their packages, in other words, while keeping prices the same. This is another way food inflation hits home.

#5) The TSA will engage in a massive hiring spree and expansion into the streets, running roadside checkpoints

Pedophiles unite! Buoyed by the Obama surge, the TSA will ramp up its hiring and begin building a literal army of pedophiles, thieves and psychopaths which will soon begin to appear across the USA running roadside checkpoints.
I also predict that the vast majority of Americans are now so brainwashed into a slave mentality that they will gladly agree to TSA body cavity searches on the side of the road in the name of “protecting us from terrorism.”
This isn’t mere conjecture. A brilliant new survey commissioned by InfoWars has revealed that an astonishing 35% of Americans would voluntarily wear “shock bracelets” if required by the TSA in order to fly.
In addition, nearly one-third of Americans would also accept body cavity searches by the TSA as a prerequisite to flying. These disturbing survey results reveal that roughly one-third of Americans have already surrendered their dignity to a slave-inducing police state, and many would actually smile in the name of “security” while they are being medically raped by the TSA in the name of a completely fabricated “war on terror” stolen straight out of the novel 1984.

#6) The expansion of the welfare state will kick into high gear with explosive growth in food stamps and unemployment

Under Obama, food stamps and unemployment claims have already experienced alarmingly worsening numbers. Watch for things to get even worse as more Americans thrown out of work by the failed economic policies of the Obama administration sign up for free food and paycheck entitlements from the government.
This is part of the plan, of course: Gut the economy and make the population entirely dependent on government. From there, it’s a slam-dunk to get elected as a socialist or even a communist, and the U.S. economy begins to take on the look of a nation like Venezuela or Argentina.

#7) A wave of unemployment will gut America’s economy as Obamacare causes employers to fire workers en masse

As Obamacare kicks in (2013 and 2014), employers will do three things to avoid going bankrupt under the financial oppression of socialized health care:
1) FIRE more workers to reduce overall business size. 2) REDUCE workers’ hours to below the government mandated threshold for health care. 3) OFFSHORE more jobs to other countries.
The net effect of this will be, predictably, millions more Americans out of workor working two or three low-paying jobs, none of which actually provide them the health care they were promised by Obama.

#8) A wave of crime seizes America

Following the mass layoffs and slashing of employee hours, the nation will begin to see yet more families and individuals in a state of economic desperation.
This will inevitably lead to more crime as people turn to theft to try to make ends meet. Watch for more copper thefts as well as more emboldened hit-and-run crime tactics (such as motorcycles being driven through shopping malls, smashing jewelry store cases and making off with the loot).
I predict you will see more vehicles smashing through the front doors of retail stores, more home burglaries and more muggings, especially in high-population cities where Obama’s economic policies have the most devastating impact. Right now, Detroit is already a “war zone” where police warn visitors not to enter the city, and Chicago will soon join the ranks of cities where gangs run rampant, outnumbering police by a wide margin.

#9) Another radiological scare will erupt as Fukushima’s fuel polls suffer continued structural failure

This is not a sure thing, but chances are that Fukushima’s remaining structure will suffer a partial or total collapse within the next year, causing an unprecedented release of radiation that will reach U.S. shores.
This could happen at any moment, technically, thanks to another earthquake or tsunami. Even a typhoon could cause sufficient damage to topple a large fuel containment pool. For some inexplicable reason, nuclear fuel pools are stored above ground in the Fukushima facility, making them highly susceptible to environmental damage.

#10) Massive government crackdowns on the free speech of anyone advocating liberty

Watch for free speech to be increasingly called “hate speech” when it criticizes the government or advocates liberty. Watch for renewed efforts to censor internet sites that advocate liberty and freedom. You may see Google removing such sites from its search engine.

YouTube will get even more aggressive at banning videos that teach liberty, and the mainstream media will continue to pound propaganda into the minds of the mainstream zombies, teaching them that people who believe in liberty are somehow “terrorists.”
In fact, the next four years will be a tumultuous time for the free speech of those who criticize government and Obama. At the same time, the “free speech” of those who threaten conservatives with violence will be completely tolerated, if not encouraged. Even right now, it is publicly acceptable to make threats of violence against conservative white people, but never against liberal black people.
This double standard will get even worse over the next year or so, to the point where you’ll see TV pundits and comedians like Bill Maher or Michael Moore openly advocating the arrest and killing of anyone who does not believe in Obammunism. The rhetoric of violence is just a preview of what’s coming in the physical realm.
The NDAA, of course, gives Obama the “right” to pursue precisely those actions: No judge, no jury and not even a warrant required!

A revolution is in America’s future

This is all the prelude to the coming “Cultural Revolution” in America, where the political left will soon call for the mass culling of all survivalists, independent farmers, and anyone who follows a lifestyle of self-reliance. Individuality will be seen as a threat to the leftist collective, and those who do not bow down to the power of the police state will not only be arrested and terminated; the mainstream media will CHEER the entire process through hate propaganda disguised as “protecting America from terrorism.”
To help pull this off, a false flag event will almost certainly be staged that depicts some hapless gun owner as a crazy person who poses a threat to society. Watch for another Colorado-style mass shooting, or the bombing of a government building followed by the immediate blaming of a convenient patsy. All the usual suspects on talk radio will also be blamed for it: Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and so on.

What you can do to protect yourself during this rise of terrible evil

There is little question now that those who believe in the real America are sooner or later going to have to take a stand against the Obammunism agenda and the endless hoards of “useless eaters” who now only exist to feed off the government (while confiscating as much wealth from the producers as possible).
How and when this actually happens is anybody’s guess, but it will likely take many years to completely unfold.
I’ve always advocated non-violent revolutions via the ballot box, but at this point it’s obvious that those who suck the economy dry through never-ending handouts are now the voting majority. They now outnumber the innovators, the entrepreneurs and the productive citizens of society. From here, it’s only a downward spiral as citizens repeatedly vote themselves more and more handouts until the entire system collapses in both financial and cultural ruin. As Ron Paul recently said, “America is far gone.”
“We’re over the cliff,” Ron Paul recently said on Bloomberg Television. “People do not want anything cut. They want all the bailouts to come. They want the Fed to keep printing the money. And they don’t believe that we’ve gone off the cliff or are close to going off the cliff. They think we can patch it over, that we can somehow come up with some magic solution. But you can’t have a budgetary solution if you don’t change what the role of government should be. As long as you think we have to police the world and run this welfare state, all we are going to argue about is who will get the loot.”
Preventing the total economic destruction of America will now require a Ron Paul Revolution, where tens of millions of Americans march in the streets and demand an end to out-of-control government and all its evils. Yet, the U.S. government has designated the very act of marching in the streets as an “act of terrorism,” so these protests would almost immediately escalate into a shooting war.
We are nowhere near the point where the population at large is awake enough to engage in such actions, by the way. Things are going to get much worse before they get better.
The next four years are going to be like watching an economic train wreck in super-slow motion, augmented by bursts of police state activity, censorship clamp-downs and of course increased government confiscation of everything you own: Land, money and even formerly private companies.
Today, we are living in an occupied nation, where the vast majority of those who claim to be running the country are, in reality, enemies of the state. They are dismantling, day by day, America’s economy, America’s workforce, America’s industries and even American pride. What will be left in four more years will be nothing but a shadow of the great America we once knew.

TIME TO BUY, BUY, BUY

Posted: Fri, 02 Nov 2012 22:51:00 +0000

If you aren’t already in, Monday or Tuesday should represent an exceptional buying opportunity as gold moves into its final intermediate cycle bottom.

Now that the 38% retracement has been breached I would look for a final exhaustion move to test the 50% level early next week as we move into the elections.

At that point sentiment should be completely washed out and gold will be set up for an explosive move to test the all-time highs by the end of the year or early January.

Miners should deliver even bigger gains as I expect them to break out of the bull flag that’s been forming over the last 4 weeks and generate a 25-30% rally to test their all-time highs.

We are moving into one of those rare buying opportunities that only come around once or twice a year. This is that point I warned about in my last post where one has to ignore the media and nonsense about QE3 not working. It is going to work, and it is going to work extremely well. I fully expect it to drive gold to $4000 by mid 2014.

This is purely a profit taking event, nothing more. These situations happen like clock work about every 20-25 weeks, as you can see in the chart below. Gold is now very late in the timing band for that major cycle bottom.

I want to tell you how to get almost anything you can imagine and not pay a dime for it. I’m talking about old-time horse-trading… creative deal-making… in a word, bartering.

Barter is an essential skill for weathering a disruption to the economy, to society, or to essential services when cash (or access to it) may be hard to get and you want to carefully conserve what cash you do have on hand.

And like any other survival skill, it’s best to learn it during normal times, so it’s second nature during a crisis. Knowing how to barter – and what to barter with – can go a long way toward getting you through any unforeseen tight spots.

The World’s Oldest Currency That Uncle Sam Hates

Before money, people traded things. If I had something you wanted, and you had something I valued, we might both feel richer if we swapped. A dozen eggs from your farm for a loaf of bread from my oven. Deal!

The advent of currency made the direct exchange of goods and services unnecessary, but even in our modern culture, a thriving barter economy exists.

And, if the “stuff” hits the fan – even for just a couple of weeks – you may get to see first hand how well bartering can work. After all, if you find yourself without something you need for comfort or survival, you might be able to get a hold of it by making a savvy trade or two.

Items to Stock for Bartering

In a widespread economic disruption – or even just a temporary, local breakdown – you’ll be better prepared if you have a few barter items on hand.

Consider stocking up on the following:

Coffee and tea – people love their morning beverages and will place a high trade value on such comfort items.

Hygiene supplies – everything from toothbrushes to bar soap to lip balm can be useful for barter.

Disposable lighters – These are cheap to buy, but can be very useful for trading purposes in a survival situation.

First aid supplies – aspirin, Neosporin, bandages… they’re all good. Just be sure you keep enough on hand for you and your family.

Smoking is stupid, yet the make-your-own-cigarette kits at local smoke shops can be quite useful for trade and barter.

Hard candy – sure to be of interest when much of the population is living on subsistence rations.

Note that most of the items I’ve mentioned are small – several units will fit in a single pocket. Any item that has high utility and comes in small packages is a potential barter item.

Another item is so essential that, even though it’s bulky, can be well worth storing for barter. I’m talking about water– cheap to store in times of plenty, absolutely priceless in any shortage. If you have spare storage space that’s not prone to freezing, consider putting away a few hundred extra gallons in addition to your family’s own needs.

Bartering for services can be even smarter and save you a lot of money.

If you can create a webpage but can’t unplug a stopped-up drain, you have the perfect barter opportunity with your neighborhood plumber. If you like to tend flower beds but hate to mow the lawn, make a deal with the fellow down the street who has a riding mower. Bartering with your neighbors is a great skill to develop now so you’ll have friends you can call on or fall back on in tough times.

Tips for Successful Bartering

Becoming a successful barterer takes some time and practice. You’ll find you make the best trades when you stick to some tried-and-true guidelines.

First, make sure you’re really specific in any barter ad about what you hope to find and what you have to offer. By being detailed, you’ll cut down on the tire-kickers and attract more serious traders.

Second, keep the value of the trade in mind. Your goal is to get something that you want more than what you’re giving away. You don’t want to fleece someone, or even worse, get fleeced yourself. So, know the value of what you’re offering, and figure out a normal market value range for the product you want to receive.

Finally, if you’re not using a website that provides an escrow account and trade credits, be very aware as you set up your trade. Watch for red flags like odd contact information or last-minute changes to the deal. Remember to protect your personal information. Don’t invite strange people to your home. If you’re bartering with a large, hard-to-move item, and you have to invite someone to your home, ask a friend or family member to join you for the exchange.

Overall, just be smart and trust your instincts.

Bartering Online to Save Big Time

You can start practicing your bartering skills today by getting involved in one of the many, online bartering communities. Some of these sites provide a bulletin board where you can post what you have to trade and what you’re looking for in return. Others work like a brokering service. They help you find what you need and help others find you who may be interested in what you have.

It pays to do a little research to find the site that fits you best, but these are three that I like:

Craigslist: This popular free-to-post website has an entire section dedicated to bartering. You can post what you have that you’re willing to part with and what you’re looking for in exchange. I like Craigslist because it’s local. However thieves find Craigslist convenient, too, so exercise due caution.

As always, a deal that’s too good to be true is a red flag. Plan to make your exchange in a conspicuous public place, so you don’t have to give away too much of your personal information and you avoid the hassle of shipping. Don’t advertise anything on Craigslist that a thief might want to steal, such as jewelry and fine watches. Also bear in mind that law-enforcement agencies cruise sites like Craigslist, so sure to keep all dealing above board and within the law.

Barterquest: This site is a step above Craigslist when it comes to bartering. It’s dedicated to bartering only. In most cases, it costs you nothing to post a trade, accept an offer, and actually make the exchange. You’ll be able to connect to a broader cross-section of traders on a site like this one, and that means more possibilities regarding what trades you can set up.

The Barter Company: This is a barter exchange site. It requires a membership fee to participate in the bartering process. It has perks, though. The staff works to help match you with likely bartering partners, and they have a deep and broad network of other bartering sites, so you can end up with a lot of demand for your stuff and a lot of access to other stuff. The fees are hefty, but if you’re looking to barter as part of your business, this is a good one to check out.

Another advantage of barter is that cashless transactions are generally private transactions. While I don’t ever advise breaking the law, barter is often used as a way to avoid paying lawful taxes. I mention this so you don’t inadvertently get caught up in in a tax trap.

Bartering can help you stretch your dollars so that you and your family can enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle. And, becoming a savvy barterer now might turn out to be a life-saving skill later.

Yours in Self Reliance,

CURRENT SILVER PRICE (SLV)

After topping out in April of 2011 at $48 per ounce, silver has been in a correction until it recently broke through the down trend line (straight blue). Current weakness in silver is not another market top. All the reasons for higher silver prices are firmly in place.

$208 PER OUNCE SILVER (SLV)

Based on past history, gold normally trades at 12 to 15 times the price of silver. This ratio is expected to return to normal in the near future with a rise in the price of gold to $2500 per ounce.

$1750 gold / 12 = $146 per ounce silver.

$2500 gold / 12 = $208 per ounce silver.

INVESTING IN SILVER

SLV is the most popular silver ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) and approximates the price of silver. Go to the Commerce / Finance Planning Worksheet for better ways to invest in silver. The best Exchange Traded Funds are backed by physical bullion rather than paper contracts.

Saturday, October 27, 2012 by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger Editor of NaturalNews.com

(NaturalNews) Called a “monster storm,” Hurricane Sandy is much more than a hurricane. It’s a hybrid monster storm system that weather experts are now warning could cause $1 billion in damage when it strikes the U.S. eastern seaboard early Tuesday morning.
If you’re living anywhere near Philadelphia, Boston, Delaware or surrounding states, you have a very limited window of opportunity to get ready with everything you’ll need to ride out this storm. That’s the purpose of this article: To give you an emergency preparedness checklist for surviving this “monster storm.”
Even if you don’t leave nearby, this storm can serve as an important reminder: We must ALL be prepared for unexpected events, or we can easily be caught empty-handed.

A long-lasting event: 2-3 days of being hammered by Mother Nature

Hurricane Sandy is not some simple hurricane that blows through in one night and then is over. “It’s going to be a long-lasting event, two to three days of impact for a lot of people,” said James Franklin of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. “Wind damage, widespread power outages, heavy rainfall, inland flooding and somebody is going to get a significant surge event.”
Given that it usually takes another 2-3 days for cleaning up city streets after a massive snowfall event, this means the following:
!! You need to have a 6-day food and water supply ready right now! !!
That’s 3 days for the storm and 3 days for cleanup. And that’s if nothing else goes terribly wrong. In a worst case scenario, this could extend to 7 – 10 days in some of the harder-hit areas.

Local grocery stores are already sold out of essential items

Anthony Gucciardi of NaturalSociety.com lives in the area expected to be hit by this super storm. Here’s his firsthand report from earlier today:
Major grocery stores in the area have completely sold out of essential items like batteries, bottled water, and even highly processed snack foods that do not require preparation or refrigeration. I personally went to purchase a few minor items for my preparedness kit from a local grocery outlet that is quite large and witnessed completely empty shelves within the aisle that generally contains large amounts of water bottles along with gallon jugs, and various glass sparkling water bottles. The aisle that houses the batteries (particularly the heavy duty kind used for most flashlights) was also almost entirely dry. When shopping I also saw several individuals with the government-approved ‘survival’ checklist, striking off the items one by one as they acquired them.
Last year’s hurricane Irene prompted somewhat of a response from locals within the Philadelphia and New York City area in regards to preparation and concern, but this hurricane has generated one that is far more severe. It is conservative to say that by the end of this weekend going into the storm (assuming it does hit as predicted), most if not all local stores will be out of most essential and even non-essential items. And this is just a few days after the news of the storm hit the mainstream media.
See my complete preparedness checklist, below…

Staying warm

Another huge concern with all this is the possibility that the power may be out. As temperatures drop, this could put many people in the position of having to endure very cold indoor temperatures. This lacking of heating could endure for many days, even as long as two weeks in some areas.
The best defense against the cold is, of course, to have good shelter (a roof over your head), warm clothing and extra sleeping bags for all family members.
Do NOT plan on using propane heaters indoors as these are a health hazard and a fire hazard when used indoors. Same story with candles.

Water: Do you have enough?

Imagine a week without tap water. Now you’re starting to get the picture of what may be coming.
If this storm hits as promised, you’re going to be living in third-world conditions for about a week. Most Americans have never lived in a third-world country like I have, so they’ve never really tried to live without running water, electricity, grocery stores, and so on. (It’s no fun, believe me. Nothing like a cold sponge shower to wake you up in the morning, eh?)
You’ll need a MINIMUM of 2 gallons per day, per person, stored in your home or apartment. So if there are two of you living there, and you’re planning for six days without running water, you will need 24 gallons of water stored, got it?
How can you store that much water?
• Fill your bathtub(s) with water. • Fill empty containers with water and set them aside: Milk jugs, soda bottles, jars, buckets, coolers, etc. • Buy water storage bags and fill them
Make sure you have a home water filter that doesn’t need water pressure to operate: A gravity filter or hand-pumped filteris best. I like the Katadyn brand for portable water filters.

Is your immune system ready?

If you think about the stresses put on you by a disaster scenario, many of them impact your health:
• Sleep deprivation • Adrenal gland depletion • Stress-induced nutrient depletion • Stress from cold temperatures • Possible spread of infectious disease • Anxiety
All of these can be prevented, in part, with immune-boosting nutrition. So this is a time when you really want to boost your intake of superfoods, immune-boosting herbs and nutritional supplements. You want to make sure your body is ready for the stresses and uncertainties it will soon be experiencing.
Remember: Good nutrition will also help you think better, because food affects your brain function. The cleaner your diet, the clearer your thoughts, and the better decisions you’ll make in a crisis.

Staying physically safe

Do you have a fire extinguisher? Fire trucks won’t be able to get to your house during a storm, and indoor fires can rage out of control for hours or days before help arrives. So make sure you have at least one fully-charged fire extinguisher at the ready.
What about physical safety? Do you have a way to defend yourself and your family in case looters start going door to door, demanding money, jewelry and anything else they want? Remember, if the power grid goes down, all the street lights will be off, too, plunging your city and neighborhood into darkness. Criminals love darkness. In their minds, that’s time to “loot and pillage.”
Massachusetts is very much an anti-gun state, meaning only the citizens are disarmed, but not the criminals. When the police are too busy responding to other emergencies, the green light is on for armed criminals to go door to door, robbing (disarmed) citizens at gunpoint. This doesn’t fly in Texas, where the average looter is met with a 12 gauge shotgun shoved in his face, but in Boston, it’s a free-for-all for the criminals.
Even if you don’t own a gun (or can’t legally own one), you can still have bear pepper spray — a large-sized canister of pressurized pepper spray which will strongly dissuade bad guys from hanging around and bothering you. (Check your local laws, please.)
Forget about calling 911. Virtually all emergency services will be tied up dealing with other emergencies. Just because YOU have an emergency doesn’t mean it’s THEIR emergency. By law, fire, police and ambulance services are under no legal obligation whatsoever to respond to your call. Think about that as you plan for preparedness.
For me personally, I don’t call 911 and wait to die. Instead, I call on Mr. Benelli. If you don’t know what “Mr. Benelli” means, here’s a picture that explains why Mr. Benelli instantly stops all looters: http://www.benelliusa.com/shotguns/benelli-m4.php

Hurricane Sandy “monster storm” survival checklist by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

I’ve taught preparedness to tens of thousands of people, so I know this subject very well. Here’s my preparedness checklist, and then below it, I link to some of my preparedness courses and solutions if you’re interested in those:
• Minimum 6 days of stored food. • A way to safely boil water so you can prepare food. • Non-electric can openers. • Minimum 6 days of stored water. • Portable water filter. • Full fuel tanks in all your vehicles. • Gasoline and cords for your generator (if you have one). • Sleeping bags for all family members. • Flashlights and batteries. • Minimum 6-day supply of any prescription meds. • Colloidal silver and other emergency medicine items. • Cell phones full charged, with spare batteries. • Minimum one large fully-charged fire extinguisher. • Plenty of clean laundry with warm socks, undies and heavy clothing. • Backup power source: large 12V marine (deep cycle) battery with an inverter to charge cell phones and laptops. • Sponges for cleaning things when there’s no power. • Cleaning agents: Hand soap, dish soap and bleach. • Immune boosting herbal tinctures and supplements. • Topical first aid supplies: Antiseptics, bandages, etc. • Personal hygiene items, including toilet paper. • Emergency multi-purpose knife. • Activities to pass the time when there’s no TV: books, cards, games, etc. • Copies of your important paperwork and identification documents. • Two-way radios for you and your family members to communicate. • Wind-up weather radio so you can tune in to government broadcasts. • CB broadcasting radio so you can call for help if the cell towers are down. • Nuclear preparedness: Do you have potassium iodide pills? • Hiding stuff: Do you have good hiding places in your home in case criminals break in and overpower you? • Pet preparedness: Do you have enough food and water for your animals? • Go bag: Do you have a “bug out bag” ready in case you have to evacuate? • Hiking gear: What happens if you have to leave on foot? – Cold weather hiking shoes – Rugged backpack – A good hat to protect you from the elements – Local map and compass – Water carrying containers (and a way to carry them) – Portable food – Weather-proof writing notepad – Flashlights – Identification – Portable self defense items
• Security plans for your neighborhood or building: How will you defend against looters? • Physical barriers to block doors and windows: Are your windows locked? • Tripwire alert devices and motion alert devices (see course, below). • Self defense items to defend against possible looters: – If firearms, double check your ammo, firearm lubrication and sights. – Have a challenge / response code word with your family members so that you can identify each other in the dark. For example, if you say “Flash” they should say “Thunder” in response. – Drill all safety procedures in the home. Children should know in advance where a “safe hiding place” is located. – Emergency whistles for all children or senior citizens so they can call for help.
Does this sound like a long preparedness list? It’s nothing, actually, compared to what many preppers, patriots and survivalists have already accomplished. I’m not afraid to say publicly that my own personal preparedness plans have gone far beyond the list you see above. If a three-day hurricane struck my home right now, I would be completely prepared without even making a trip to the store for supplies.

Emergency readiness products

Here are the best products we’ve put together so far for emergency preparedness:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Most delivery services are shut down Monday and Tuesday across the eastern seaboard, so if you are trying to order these products to have them delivered before Tuesday, that won’t work. UPS, Fedex, and the U.S. Postal Service will all be shut down during the storm.

Preparedness and survival courses

By now, most Natural News readers are fully aware that I’m well versed in the realm of preparedness. In addition to having in-depth knowledge of herbal medicine and nutritional defenses, I have also been licensed to carry concealed handguns by four different U.S. states, and I’ve been fingerprinted, vetted and approved by the FBI and federal law enforcement agencies. I have trained with U.S. military personnel on hand-to-hand combat, I’ve trained on vehicle evasion and pursuit tactics with local law enforcement, and I have helped teach physical self defense to children, women and senior citizens.

Use vinegar to kill weeds naturally and give Monsanto’s Roundup the heave ho

by JB Bardot, Thursday, May 03

(NaturalNews) There’s been lots written recently about the toxicity of Monsanto’s poster child product Roundup, exposing how harmful it is for the earth and how poisonous it is on exposure for both animals and humans. However, what is not common knowledge to most organic gardeners and back yard enthusiasts is how they can manage weed control safely without the need for dangerous pesticides. Use vinegar to kill weeds naturally and safely, with no side effects to you, your pets, wildlife and mother earth. Killing weeds naturally with vinegar allows you to target exactly what weeds to eradicate, and it’s cheap and easy to use.
Vinegar is not choosy and cannot differentiate between broad-leaf weeds, narrow-leaf weeds, grass, flowers or vegetables. If you’re not careful when applying vinegar for weed control, it will kill whatever it touches. So although it’s eco-friendly and biodegradable, it takes a little forethought to manage an effective application.

How to apply vinegar for natural weed control

The best way to apply vinegar for weed control is with a spray bottle or pump sprayer. These tools are most effective if you’re wanting to eliminate large swatches of weeds on walkways, driveways or other areas where there are no other plants immediately at risk. Because vinegar is not selective, using it for killing weeds naturally should be done on a sunny day when there is no wind to prevent it from blowing onto other plants. Part of the killing process uses the sunlight to activate the vinegar; so check the weather beforehand to be sure it’s not about to rain right after you spray. If you’re trying to be very selective and kill small batches of weeds in among other plants and flowers, apply vinegar with an old brush only to the weeds being targeted.
Spray or paint the vinegar on liberally to kill weeds naturally. Leaves and stems should be soaked. Allow it to dry and wait for a day or two to see full results. You may have to reapply more vinegar periodically. Any type of vinegar will work to kill weeds and white vinegar is the least expensive. Keep several gallons in your shed so it’s on hand when needed.

When to apply natural herbicides

Use vinegar to kill weeds before the weeds go to seed to prevent new weeds from growing. Catch them when they’re small in the early spring. Alternatively, it’s best to treat perennial weeds like dandelions in the early fall. Remove the seed heads throughout the summer when you see them. Spraying in the autumn uses the plant’s natural cycle to absorb nutrients through the leave to the roots and allows the vinegar natural weed control to penetrate to the core of the plant killing it at the root.
